Kötények

Kötények, commonly translated as aprons, are protective garments worn over clothing to prevent stains, spills, and other forms of soiling. They are typically tied around the neck and waist, with the main fabric panel covering the front of the wearer's torso.

Aprons have a long history, with evidence of their use dating back to ancient civilizations. Initially, they were often made from animal skins or coarse fabrics, serving a practical purpose in protecting workers from dirt and wear during manual labor. Over time, as fashion evolved and domesticity became more prominent, aprons also took on decorative roles, made from finer materials and featuring embellishments.

The design and material of aprons vary widely depending on their intended use. Kitchen aprons are most common, often made from cotton or a cotton blend, designed to be durable and washable. These can range from simple bib aprons to those that cover the entire length of the body. Other types include artist aprons, which may have pockets for tools and be made from stain-resistant fabrics, and workshop aprons, which are often made from heavy-duty materials like leather or canvas to protect against tools and sharp objects.

In many cultures, the apron has also become associated with specific professions or roles, such as chefs, waitstaff, and even barbers. The apron continues to be a functional and sometimes symbolic piece of clothing, valued for its ability to keep garments clean and protected.
