Környezetfüggség, or environmental dependence, refers to the degree to which an organism, population, or ecosystem relies on specific environmental conditions to survive and thrive. This concept is central to ecology and environmental science, highlighting how living systems interact with their surroundings to maintain balance and functionality.

In biological terms, organisms exhibit varying levels of environmental dependence based on their adaptations. Some species are highly specialized, requiring precise conditions to survive, while others are more generalist and can tolerate a broader range of environmental variations. For example, certain desert plants have evolved deep root systems and water-storing tissues to endure arid conditions, demonstrating a high degree of environmental dependence. Conversely, invasive species often succeed because they are less dependent on specific conditions, allowing them to outcompete native species in new environments.

At the ecosystem level, environmental dependence becomes even more critical. Ecosystems are complex networks of interactions between organisms and their physical environment, such as climate, soil, and water availability. Disruptions to these conditions—such as climate change, pollution, or habitat destruction—can severely impact ecosystem stability. For instance, coral reefs are highly dependent on stable water temperatures and salinity levels; warming oceans and ocean acidification threaten their survival, leading to widespread coral bleaching and ecosystem collapse.

Understanding environmental dependence is essential for conservation efforts and sustainable resource management.
