Körkortslagen

Körkortslagen, or the Driving Licence Act, is the primary legislation governing the issuance and regulation of driving licences in Sweden. This law, formally known as Lag (1998:488) om körkort, sets out the conditions and requirements for obtaining and retaining a driving licence for various categories of vehicles.

The act details the process of applying for a driving licence, including age restrictions, medical fitness requirements, and the necessary theoretical and practical driving tests. It also specifies different categories of driving licences, such as those for cars (B-körkort), motorcycles (A-körkort), and heavy goods vehicles (C- and D-körkort), each with its own set of eligibility criteria and training obligations.

Furthermore, Körkortslagen addresses the issue of licence revocation and suspension. It outlines the grounds for losing one's driving licence, which can include traffic violations, impaired driving, or accumulating too many penalty points. The law also regulates the period of disqualification and the procedures for re-obtaining a licence after suspension. The Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) is the authority responsible for administering and enforcing the provisions of the Körkortslagen. The act aims to ensure road safety by setting standards for drivers and penalizing those who do not comply with traffic regulations.
