Kõvades

Kõvades is a term originating from Estonian folklore, generally referring to spirits or entities associated with or inhabiting the forest. These beings are often depicted as mischievous or even dangerous to humans who venture too deep into their domain. Descriptions vary, but they are sometimes imagined as shapeshifters, capable of appearing as animals or even mimicking human forms to lure people astray.

The forest itself, or specific ancient trees and clearings within it, are considered the dwelling places of Kõvades. They are believed to protect the natural world and can react with anger to those who disrespect or harm it. Rituals and offerings were sometimes performed by villagers to appease or seek favor from these forest spirits, ensuring safe passage through the woods or a bountiful harvest.
