Kõrgusel

Kõrgusel is a small borough located in Märjamaa Parish in Rapla County, in the north-western part of Estonia. The settlement lies approximately 20 kilometres south of Rapla, the county capital, and about 30 kilometres north of the town of Kohila. It sits on the western side of the Pärnu River floodplain, surrounded by a mix of agricultural land and forested areas.

The first recorded mention of Kõrgusel dates back to the 17th century, when it was part of the manor estate of Laane- and Käru. In the 19th century, the construction of the Vändra–Rapla railway line, which passed near the borough, spurred modest development and increased its strategic importance as a local transport node. The railway line continued to operate until the late 20th century, after which it fell into disuse and was dismantled.

According to the 2021 census, Kõrgusel has a population of roughly 200 inhabitants. The majority of residents are engaged in agriculture, forestry, and commuting to nearby larger towns for employment. The community features a small primary school, a volunteer fire station, and a community centre that hosts local events. Notable landmarks include the historic Kõrgusel Manor house, which now functions as a cultural heritage site, and a small Lutheran chapel built in the early 1900s.

Today, Kõrgusel is representative of Estonia’s rural settlements, balancing preservation of its historical character with the demands of contemporary rural life. Its proximity to major roads and its natural surroundings make it an attractive location for those seeking a quiet, community-oriented lifestyle within reach of larger urban centres.
