Käyttökäyttöjärjestelmästä, sometimes referred to as nested operating systems or guest operating systems, describes a situation where one operating system runs on top of another operating system. This is typically achieved through the use of virtualization software, such as VMware, VirtualBox, or Hyper-V. The underlying operating system is known as the host operating system, while the operating system running within the virtualized environment is called the guest operating system.

The primary purpose of a käyttökäyttöjärjestelmästä is to allow users to run multiple operating systems simultaneously on a single physical machine. This is beneficial for a variety of reasons. Developers and testers often use it to create isolated environments for testing software on different platforms or configurations without needing multiple physical computers. IT professionals utilize it for server consolidation, running multiple virtual servers on a single piece of hardware to improve resource utilization and reduce costs. Furthermore, it enables users to experiment with different operating systems, such as running Linux on a Windows machine or vice versa, for educational or personal use.

The guest operating system interacts with the host operating system through a hypervisor, which is the software layer responsible for managing the virtualized environment. The hypervisor intercepts hardware requests from the guest OS and translates them for the host OS, or directly manages hardware resources if the hypervisor is type 1 (bare-metal). This abstraction allows the guest OS to believe it has direct access to hardware, even though it is being mediated. Performance can be a consideration, as the virtualization layer introduces some overhead compared to running an OS directly on hardware. However, modern virtualization technologies have significantly improved efficiency.
