Käyttäjäluettelointia, often translated as user enumeration or user listing, is a security vulnerability that allows an attacker to identify valid usernames or account names within a system. This is typically achieved by observing how a system responds to login attempts or other user-related queries. For example, if a system provides different error messages or response times when a user attempts to log in with a correct versus an incorrect username, an attacker can exploit this difference to build a list of existing accounts.

The primary risk associated with user enumeration is that it can be a precursor to other, more serious attacks. Once an attacker has a list of valid usernames, they can then focus their efforts on brute-force attacks, password guessing, or social engineering attempts against specific, known accounts. This significantly reduces the search space for an attacker, making their malicious activities more efficient and potentially more successful.

Preventing user enumeration involves careful design of system responses. Systems should aim to provide consistent feedback regardless of whether a username is valid or not. For instance, a login form should ideally return a generic "invalid username or password" message for both incorrect usernames and incorrect passwords. Rate limiting on login attempts and implementing robust authentication mechanisms like multi-factor authentication can also help mitigate the risks associated with user enumeration by making it harder and slower for attackers to test potential usernames.
