Käyttäjäkertomukset, often translated as user stories, are short, simple descriptions of a feature told from the perspective of the person who desires the new capability, usually a user or customer of the system. They are a common practice in agile software development. The typical format is "As a [type of user], I want [some goal] so that [some reason]." This structure helps to ensure that user needs are at the forefront of development.

The primary purpose of a user story is to articulate how a piece of work will deliver value back to the customer. They are intentionally brief to encourage conversation and collaboration rather than detailed specification. Instead of exhaustive documentation, user stories act as placeholders for a conversation between the development team and the stakeholders. They define a desired outcome rather than a specific implementation.

User stories are typically managed in a product backlog, which is a prioritized list of features. During sprint planning, the development team selects user stories from the top of the backlog to work on during an upcoming sprint. Acceptance criteria are often associated with user stories, outlining the specific conditions that must be met for the story to be considered complete and successful. This ensures clarity on what constitutes a finished piece of work.
