Käynnistysteknologiat refers to the various methods and systems used to initiate the operation of an internal combustion engine. These technologies are essential for transforming stored energy into mechanical motion, allowing a vehicle or machine to begin functioning. The most common method for gasoline and diesel engines is the electric starter system. This system typically comprises a starter motor, a battery, and an ignition switch. When the ignition switch is activated, electricity flows from the battery to the starter motor, which then engages a flywheel or flexplate connected to the engine's crankshaft. This engagement spins the crankshaft, initiating the combustion cycle.

In older vehicles or in situations where electrical power is unavailable, manual starting methods were employed. This often involved a hand crank that the operator would physically turn to rotate the engine's crankshaft. For larger engines, such as those found in heavy machinery or some diesel applications, pneumatic or hydraulic starters might be used. These systems utilize compressed air or hydraulic fluid, respectively, to turn the engine over. More recently, advancements have introduced technologies like keyless ignition systems, which replace the traditional key with a button, and smart start systems that can remotely initiate engine operation.
