Kätepesuvahendid, or hand sanitizers, are chemical substances or solutions designed to cleanse the hands of microorganisms. They are commonly used in situations where access to soap and water is limited or impractical, such as in public transportation, schools, and healthcare facilities.

Hand sanitizers typically contain ethanol (alcohol) or isopropanol, which kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. They may also include emollients to soften the skin and fragrances for pleasant scent. The effectiveness of hand sanitizers depends on their alcohol concentration, with at least 60% alcohol by volume being recommended by the World Health Organization.

To use a hand sanitizer effectively, it should be applied to the entire surface of the hands and fingers, ensuring that the product covers all areas, including the palms, back of the hands, between the fingers, and under the nails. It is important to rub the hands together until they feel dry, which usually takes around 20 seconds.

While hand sanitizers are convenient and easy to use, they should not be relied upon as a substitute for proper handwashing with soap and water. Soap and water are more effective at removing dirt, grease, and certain types of microorganisms. Hand sanitizers are best used as an adjunct to good hand hygiene practices, providing an additional layer of protection in situations where handwashing is not possible.
