Kärlspasm

Kärlspasm is a medical term referring to the sudden, temporary constriction of a blood vessel. This narrowing reduces blood flow through the affected vessel. It can occur in arteries, veins, or capillaries, and can affect any part of the body. The cause of kärlspasm can vary widely and may include stress, cold exposure, certain medications, or underlying medical conditions.

Symptoms of kärlspasm depend on the location and severity of the constriction. In the heart, it can lead to chest pain, known as angina. In the brain, it can cause stroke-like symptoms such as sudden weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking. Peripheral kärlspasm can manifest as pain, paleness, and coldness in the affected limb.

Diagnosis of kärlspasm often involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and imaging studies like angiography. Treatment aims to relieve the spasm, restore blood flow, and address any underlying causes. Medications such as vasodilators are commonly used to relax the blood vessels. Lifestyle modifications may also be recommended, especially if stress or cold exposure are contributing factors. In some cases, more invasive procedures might be necessary.
