Känselsystemen

Känselsystemen, often translated as "sensory systems" or "systems of sensation," refers to the complex biological mechanisms within an organism that detect and process stimuli from the environment and the internal body. These systems are fundamental to an organism's ability to perceive the world, react to changes, and maintain homeostasis.

The primary sensory systems include vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Vision, mediated by the eyes, allows for the detection of light and the interpretation of images. Hearing, involving the ears, processes sound waves. Olfaction (smell) and gustation (taste) are chemical senses, detecting airborne molecules and dissolved substances, respectively. Touch, a complex system encompassing pressure, temperature, pain, and texture, is primarily perceived through the skin.

Beyond these exteroceptive senses that gather information from the external environment, organisms also possess interoceptive systems. These monitor internal bodily states, such as blood pressure, temperature, and the stretching of organs, providing information crucial for regulating physiological functions. Proprioception, often considered a sixth sense, provides information about the position and movement of one's own body parts.

The processing of sensory information involves specialized sensory receptors that transduce stimuli into electrochemical signals. These signals are then transmitted via nerves to specific areas of the brain, where they are interpreted and integrated to form conscious perceptions, trigger reflexes, or initiate motor responses. The efficiency and sophistication of an organism's känselsystemen are directly linked to its survival and its ability to interact effectively with its surroundings.
