Kábelkategóriák, or cable categories, are standardized classifications used to describe the performance and characteristics of electrical cables. These categories are primarily used in the field of telecommunications and data networking to ensure compatibility and reliability of cables. The most commonly referenced standard for cable categories is the TIA/EIA-568 standard, which is widely adopted in North America, while the ISO/IEC 11801 standard is used internationally.

Cable categories are typically denoted by a number, such as Category 5 (Cat 5), Category 5e (Cat 5e), Category 6 (Cat 6), and Category 6a (Cat 6a). Each category represents a specific level of performance, with higher numbers indicating better performance. For example, Category 5 cables are suitable for speeds up to 100 Mbps, while Category 6 cables support speeds up to 1 Gbps. Category 6a and higher categories are designed for even faster data transmission rates, making them suitable for applications such as Gigabit Ethernet and 10-Gigabit Ethernet.

The key performance indicators for cable categories include bandwidth, attenuation, and crosstalk. Bandwidth refers to the range of frequencies that the cable can transmit without significant distortion. Attenuation is the loss of signal strength as it travels through the cable, while crosstalk refers to the interference between adjacent pairs of wires within the cable. Higher category cables have lower attenuation and crosstalk, allowing for more reliable and faster data transmission.

In addition to the category, cables are also classified by their construction, such as solid or stranded conductors, and by their shielding, which can be unshielded twisted pair (UTP), shielded twisted pair (STP), or foil shielded twisted pair (F/STP). The choice of cable category and construction depends on the specific requirements of the application, including the distance between devices, the desired data transmission speed, and the environmental conditions in which the cable will be used.
