Kytkinhäviöt, or switching losses, are energy losses that occur in power electronic devices such as transistors, IGBTs, MOSFETs, and diodes during the transition between on and off states. When a device switches, its voltage and current overlap for a short period, creating a region where both are simultaneously non‑zero. The instantaneous power during this transition is non‑negligible and, when integrated over time, yields the switching loss.

The magnitude of kytkinhäviöt depends on the switching speed, voltage and current levels, device characteristics, and the switching waveform. Faster transitions reduce the overlap and thus the loss, but require higher frequency of operation, which can increase other losses such as conduction loss. These models can be linear or nonlinear and are calibrated against measurement data.

Switching losses are significant in high‑frequency converters, such as those used in DC‑DC converters, inverters, and motor drives. They contribute to overall power efficiency, thermal management, and product cost. Common mitigation techniques include pulse‑width modulation to reduce duty cycle, gate drive optimization to control turn‑on and turn‑off times, use of snubbers or dead‑time, and device selection with lower switching energy. Accurate estimation of kytkinhäviöt is essential for the design, simulation, and control of modern power electronic systems.
