Kystatyyppejä, or coastal types, are classifications used to describe the various shapes and forms of coastlines. These classifications help in understanding the geological processes that shape coasts, as well as in managing coastal resources and mitigating the impacts of coastal hazards. The most common classification system is based on the work of William Morris Davis, who identified three primary coastal types: emergent, submergent, and stable.

Emergent coasts are characterized by the uplift of the land relative to the sea level, leading to the exposure of previously submerged features. These coasts often exhibit steep cliffs, wave-cut platforms, and a variety of landforms such as sea caves and arches. Examples of emergent coasts can be found in areas like the British Isles and parts of Scandinavia.

Submergent coasts, on the other hand, are formed when the land is sinking relative to the sea level, causing the sea to encroach upon the land. These coasts typically feature gently sloping beaches, barrier islands, and estuaries. Submergent coasts are common in areas with active tectonic processes, such as the Mississippi Delta and the Nile Delta.

Stable coasts are those where the land and sea level are relatively constant, resulting in a balance between erosion and deposition. These coasts often have a mix of features from both emergent and submergent coasts, such as beaches, dunes, and rocky outcrops. Examples of stable coasts can be found along the eastern coast of the United States and parts of the Mediterranean.

Other classification systems have been developed to account for more complex coastal environments, such as those influenced by human activities or unique geological processes. For instance, the coastal classification system developed by the European Union distinguishes between natural and anthropogenic coasts, as well as between coasts with high and low energy levels. This system is particularly useful for managing coastal zones and implementing effective coastal protection strategies.
