Kyrämauhat

Kyrämauhat, also known as fire pencils, are traditional Finnish fire-starting tools used by indigenous Sámi and other northern communities. They consist of a long, slender wooden stick, often pointed at one end, with a small, flammable material, such as birch bark or moss, attached or incorporated at the tip. The primary purpose of kyrämauhat is to generate sparks and heat through friction or simple striking methods to ignite fire in demanding outdoor conditions.

Historically, kyrämauhat played a vital role for Sámi herders, hunters, and travelers who relied on them for warmth, cooking, and light during long, cold periods. The design emphasizes durability and ease of use in cold environments where conventional fire-starting tools like matches or lighters might be impractical or unavailable.

The technique involves striking the pointed end of the kyrämauhat against a rough surface or using friction by rubbing the stick rapidly against a softer material to generate sufficient heat and sparks. The flammable tip aids in catching the sparks, enabling the user to ignite tinder or other combustible materials. The process requires skill and patience, especially in damp or windy conditions.
