Kylmäuuttomenetelmät, or cold extraction methods, refer to processes that extract desired compounds from a raw material at low temperatures. These methods are employed across various industries, including food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, to preserve the integrity and efficacy of sensitive substances. Unlike hot extraction, which can degrade volatile or heat-sensitive compounds, cold extraction aims to minimize thermal stress on the material and the extracted product.

A common cold extraction technique is maceration. This involves soaking the raw material, such as plant parts, in a solvent for an extended period. The solvent slowly dissolves and draws out the target compounds. Another method is percolation, where the solvent flows through the material, continuously washing out the desired substances. Cold pressing is a physical method frequently used for extracting oils from seeds and fruits, like olives or nuts. This process uses mechanical pressure to squeeze out the oil without applying heat.

The choice of solvent is crucial in cold extraction. Common solvents include water, ethanol, and various oils, depending on the polarity and solubility of the compounds being extracted. The low-temperature environment helps to prevent the oxidation or degradation of delicate molecules. This makes cold extraction particularly valuable for extracting compounds like essential oils, certain vitamins, and antioxidants, where heat can significantly diminish their quality and potency. The resulting extracts are often used in their natural state without further processing.
