In psychology, it refers to the decrease in an individual's response to a stimulus after repeated presentations. For example, a new song might be exciting initially, but after hearing it many times, its appeal may fade.

In economics and marketing, the saturation effect often relates to consumer behavior. When a consumer has had enough of a particular product or brand, further advertising or availability may not increase sales or satisfaction. This can occur when a market is saturated with similar products, leading to reduced differentiation and a lack of strong preference for any single offering. For instance, if a town has numerous coffee shops, opening another one might not be as successful as the first few because the demand for coffee is already largely met.

The concept also applies to learning and information processing. Prolonged exposure to the same information can lead to cognitive fatigue and reduced learning efficiency.
