Kvällspass

Kvällspass is a work shift that starts in the late afternoon and ends in the evening. It is part of shift systems used to provide coverage beyond regular day work hours. The exact times vary by employer and sector, but common windows are roughly 15:00–23:00 or 14:00–22:00, sometimes extending until midnight.

It is used in many industries, including healthcare (hospitals, home care), emergency services, manufacturing, logistics, retail, hospitality, and transportation. In some fields, kvällspass overlaps with dinner service, producing a continuous workflow.

Advantages and challenges: For employers, kvällspass can increase coverage, align with customer demand, and facilitate handovers. For workers, it can offer shift allowances or premium pay, opportunities for daytime commitments elsewhere, and potentially easier access to certain roles. Downsides include disruption to social life and routines, fatigue, and higher health risks; practices vary by industry and collective agreements.

Regulation: In Sweden, working hours are regulated by law and collective agreements. The Working Hours Act (Arbetstidslagen) sets limits on weekly hours, rest periods, and night work; kvällspass is subject to these rules and sector provisions. Employers must provide rest between shifts and consider health and safety.
