Kvanttivärähtelyihin, or quantum oscillations, refer to periodic variations in measurable physical quantities that arise from the coherent interaction between discrete quantum states. The term is derived from the Finnish words *kvanttinen* (quantum) and *värähtely* (vibration). In practice, quantum oscillations manifest when a system occupies a superposition of eigenstates with different energies, causing observable properties to oscillate at frequencies determined by the energy differences.

A simple example is a two‑level system driven by an external microwave field, which produces Rabi oscillations of the population between the ground and excited states. In solid‑state physics, magnetic field–induced oscillations such as the de Haas–van Alphen and Shubnikov–de Haas effects occur in metals and semiconductors, revealing details of the Fermi surface and quasiparticle dynamics. Bloch oscillations describe the periodic motion of electrons in a crystal lattice under a constant electric field, a phenomenon that has been observed in engineered optical lattices and semiconductor superlattices. Additionally, quantum beats appear in atomic and molecular spectroscopy when multiple transition pathways interfere.

The analysis of quantum oscillations provides a powerful spectroscopic tool for probing energy level spacings, coherence times, and interaction strengths in a variety of systems, ranging from atomic vapors and trapped ions to superconducting qubits and two‑dimensional materials. Understanding and controlling these oscillations is crucial for quantum information processing, precision sensing, and the development of novel electronic devices.
