Kvalitén

Kvalitén is a theoretical and applied concept used in quality assessment to express an aggregate level of quality for a product, process, or system. It is defined as a dimensionless index that combines multiple sub-indicators such as reliability, performance under expected use, durability, manufacturability, and conformity to specification. The aim is to provide a single, comparable measure across items or stages in a lifecycle.

Etymology: The term derives from the Scandinavian root kvalit- meaning "quality," with the suffix -én to indicate a derived quality measure. In practice, Kvalitén is used in both industrial quality management and research settings to discuss overall quality potential rather than any single attribute.

Measurement and calculation: Kvalitén is typically computed as a weighted composite score from standardized sub-metrics. Common sub-metrics include defect rate, mean time between failures, performance efficiency, tolerance adherence, and customer-reported quality. Scores are normalized to a 0–100 scale, where higher values indicate better quality. The weighting scheme is context-dependent and subject to stakeholder agreement.

Applications: It is used in procurement for supplier benchmarking, in product development to monitor quality progression, and in post-market surveillance to track quality trends over time. It can be applied to physical goods, software, and services with measurable quality attributes.

Limitations: As a composite index, Kvalitén can obscure trade-offs between components, and its usefulness depends on the selection and validity of sub-indicators. Data quality and context strongly influence interpretation.
