Kuumaprässäys, or hot pressing, is a manufacturing process used to form and consolidate materials, often polymers or composites, by applying heat and pressure simultaneously. The material is typically placed between two heated molds or plates, and then a significant force is applied. This combination of heat and pressure allows the material to soften, flow, and conform to the shape of the mold, while also fusing or bonding together different layers or particles.

The temperature used in hot pressing is generally above the material's melting point or glass transition temperature, enabling it to become pliable. The applied pressure ensures that the material fills all the contours of the mold and that any voids or air pockets are eliminated, leading to a dense and consolidated final product. The duration of the pressing cycle, as well as the specific temperature and pressure values, are critical parameters that depend on the type of material being processed and the desired final properties of the part.

Hot pressing is widely employed in various industries. In the plastics industry, it is used for producing molded parts, laminates, and sheets. For composite materials, such as those made with carbon fiber or fiberglass, hot pressing is a common method for consolidating the layers and achieving high strength and structural integrity. It is also used in the production of wood-based products like particleboard and MDF, where heat and pressure bind wood particles or fibers together with an adhesive. The process can result in parts with excellent dimensional stability and mechanical properties.
