Kuulate

Kuulate is a traditional textile technique described in ethnographic sources as a method for creating decorative circular motifs by spiral winding of yarn around a central core. Practiced by the fictional Ku people of the Kuara Highlands, kuulate produces fabrics with concentric rings and radiating patterns that are valued for their symmetry and visual rhythm. The term is believed to derive from the Ku language, with elements meaning “circle” and “to weave.”

The technique begins with preparing a warp and selecting a central core, such as a bead or small disc. Weft yarns are wound in successive rings around the core, with careful control of tension and stitch density to maintain even circularity. Color changes occur at set intervals to form contrasting rings, and the outer edge is finished to secure the structure. Natural fibers, including locally sourced wool and cotton, and traditional dyes are commonly used, contributing to the tactile and tonal qualities of the finished pieces.

Kuulate textiles have ceremonial and everyday uses within Ku culture. They are often incorporated into harvest regalia, ritual banners, and family heirloom textiles.
