Kurkunpuristusta

Kurkunpuristusta, commonly known as strangulation or throttling, is a form of asphyxia characterized by external pressure applied to the neck, obstructing the airway or blood flow to the brain. This can be achieved through manual pressure, ligatures such as ropes or cords, or other constricting objects. The severity of the injury and the outcome depend on the force and duration of the pressure applied, as well as the specific structures of the neck affected.

When the airway is compressed, air cannot reach the lungs, leading to a lack of oxygen. If the blood vessels, primarily the carotid arteries and jugular veins, are constricted, the flow of oxygenated blood to the brain is interrupted, causing a rapid decrease in consciousness. The vagus nerve, also located in the neck, can be stimulated by pressure, potentially leading to cardiac arrest.

Kurkunpuristusta can result in a range of injuries, from temporary loss of consciousness to permanent brain damage or death. Common symptoms include petechiae (small red spots) in the eyes and on the face due to ruptured capillaries, bruising, swelling, and vocal cord damage. In forensic investigations, kurkunpuristusta is a significant factor in determining the cause of death in cases of suspected homicide or suicide. It is a highly dangerous act with potentially fatal consequences.
