Kuriosen

Kuriosen is a term used in museology and curatorial studies to describe a class of objects or phenomena that evoke curiosity due to their rarity, strangeness, or novelty. The word draws on the German root Kuriosität, meaning curiosity, and is often used in discussions of collecting practices and exhibition histories.

Historically, European aristocratic collections featured Wunderkammern or Kunstkammern, rooms or cabinets that housed natural specimens, ethnographic artifacts, mechanical devices, and other remarkable items. In this context, items were grouped as Kuriosen when they displayed unusual morphology, contested provenance, or novelty in function or origin. The concept helps scholars analyze how early collectors selected, interpreted, and presented objects to demonstrate knowledge, status, and wonder.

Typical Kuriosen include natural wonders such as rare minerals or preserved specimens, unusual fossils or deformities, meteorites, artifacts of uncertain or exotic origin, and mechanical automata. Objects classified as Kuriosen often prompted questions about classification, science, and cultural exchange, making them valuable for exploring the history of knowledge and the politics of display.

In contemporary practice, the term Kuriosen is encountered mainly in scholarly writing or in exhibitions that explicitly address collecting history, museology, or ethics. Modern museums tend to prefer precise categories—natural history, ethnography, technology—while using Kuriosen as a conceptual umbrella to discuss curatorial choices, visitor engagement, and the commercialization of rarity.
