Kuplas

Kuplas is a colloquial term used in some Nordic countries, particularly Finland, to refer to a type of traditional sauna building. These structures are often characterized by their distinct architectural style and their integration with the natural landscape. Typically, kuplas are small, round, or dome-shaped buildings, hence the name which derives from the Finnish word for "dome" or "cupola."

The construction of a kuplas often utilizes natural materials such as wood, stone, and turf, reflecting a close connection to the environment. The design prioritizes functionality and warmth, with the rounded shape helping to retain heat efficiently. Inside, a wood-fired stove heats stones, which are then doused with water to create steam, a process known as löyly. This creates a humid and intensely hot atmosphere typical of a Finnish sauna experience.

Historically, kuplas served as more than just bathing facilities. They were often multi-purpose spaces, used for washing, cooking, and even as rudimentary dwellings. Their presence is frequently associated with rural settings, situated near lakes or rivers for easy access to water for both bathing and cooling off. While modern saunas are common, the kuplas represents an older, more rustic form of this cultural practice, embodying a sense of tradition and simplicity.
