Kupferauflage

Kupferauflage refers to the process of applying a thin layer of copper onto another material. This technique is employed for a variety of purposes across different industries, primarily for its electrical conductivity, decorative appeal, and as an intermediate layer for further plating.

In electronics, copper plating is crucial for creating conductive pathways on printed circuit boards (PCBs). The copper layer allows for the flow of electrical current between components. It is also used to plate wires and connectors, improving their conductivity and resistance to corrosion.

The decorative aspect of copper plating is significant in jewelry making and the finishing of metal objects. A copper layer can provide a warm, reddish-brown hue, which can be left as is or serve as a base for subsequent plating with more precious metals like gold or silver. This underlayer can enhance adhesion and the overall appearance of the final finish.

Chemically, copper plating often involves electrodeposition. In this method, the object to be plated is submerged in an electrolyte solution containing copper ions.
