Kunstobjekt is a German-language term used in art discourse to denote an object that is presented as a work of art. It encompasses a wide range of forms, including sculpture, assemblage, ready-mades, and objects integrated into installations. The designation emphasizes the object itself—the material presence, texture, scale, and aura—rather than the surrounding performance or context alone.

In German-speaking scholarship, kunstobjekt is often contrasted with broader categories such as Kunstwerk or Installation. While Kunstwerk can refer to a single object or a complex project, kunstobjekt tends to describe a discrete object whose status as art is central to its meaning.

Historical development: The term gained traction in 20th-century modernist and postwar criticism, influenced by Dada and the readymade, and by the rise of object-based art in the 1960s and 1970s.
