Kundavai

Kundavai was a prominent Chola princess, the daughter of Parantaka II and Vanavan Mahadevi. She is widely known for her intelligence, political acumen, and patronage of art and literature. Kundavai played a significant role in the administration and diplomacy of the Chola empire, particularly during the reign of her brother, Rajaraja I.

Her influence is often highlighted in historical inscriptions and literary works. She is credited with arranging marriages and forging alliances that strengthened the Chola kingdom. Kundavai was also a devout follower of Hinduism and is believed to have commissioned and supported the construction of temples. Her dowry was used to fund the construction of the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, a testament to her wealth and piety.

Kundavai's life and contributions are primarily documented in the historical novel "Ponniyin Selvan" by Kalki Krishnamurthy, which, while fictionalized, draws heavily on historical accounts and has significantly popularized her image. The novel portrays her as a wise and influential figure who actively participated in court politics and advised her brother on matters of state. She is often depicted as a key strategist and a protector of the Chola dynasty's interests. Her personal life, including her marriage to the Vengi king Vimaladitya, is also noted for its political significance in consolidating Chola power in the Deccan region.
