The term "kumilevis" is derived from the Kankanaey language, where "kumi" means "to sing" and "levis" refers to the rhythmic accompaniment provided by percussion instruments. This genre is deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual practices of the Igorot people, who are known for their rich oral traditions and communal celebrations.

Kumilevis typically features melodic vocal lines that are often accompanied by indigenous instruments such as the *gong* (a type of metallophone), *tambul* (a drum), and *bongos* (small hand drums).
