Kulturfeltet

Kulturfeltet is a term used in Norwegian to describe the social space in which cultural production and culture-related activities take place, including institutions, organizations, professionals, audiences, and policies. It denotes a field of cultural production with its own rules, hierarchies, and power relations, shaped by funding, governance, audience tastes, education, and media coverage. The concept is closely related to the sociological notion of a cultural field, in which actors compete for legitimacy, visibility, and financial resources.

Actors include artists and creators, museums, galleries, theatres, music venues, festivals, publishers, broadcasters, cultural agencies, universities, and municipal and national authorities. The state and public funding play a central role in many cultural contexts, but private foundations, corporate sponsorship, and volunteer networks are also part of the field.
