Kuljan

Kuljan refers to a type of traditional dwelling found in parts of the Balkans, particularly in rural areas of North Macedonia and neighboring regions. These structures are typically characterized by their robust construction, designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. They are often built from local materials such as stone, wood, and mud, reflecting the agricultural landscape and available resources.

The architectural style of a kuljan can vary, but common features include thick walls, which provide insulation and structural integrity, and a relatively simple layout. Many kuljani were built with defense in mind, featuring smaller windows and a fortified appearance, a legacy of historical periods of conflict and instability in the region. Over time, the function of kuljani has evolved from primarily residential to often being used for storage or as agricultural outbuildings.
