The word is a compound of the Albanian root kujdes, meaning “care” or “attention,” and the suffix‑inë, which often forms nouns denoting a practitioner or professional, similar to how the English suffix ‑er works. As such, kajdestarinë translates loosely as “caregiver” or “custodian” in context.

The earliest documented usage of kujdestarinë appears in a 2015 essay by the Albanian historian Ilir Hoxha, who introduced the concept to emphasize the need for trained experts in the conservation of medieval manuscripts and historic architecture. Since then, the term has been adopted by heritage organizations such as the Albanian National Conservation Agency and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) when referencing individuals responsible for protective measures.
