Kuivamustekynät, also known as dry erase markers or whiteboard markers, are writing instruments that use a type of ink designed to be easily erased from non-porous surfaces, most commonly whiteboards. The ink typically consists of a pigment, a solvent, and a release agent. When the ink is applied to a surface, the solvent evaporates, leaving behind the pigment and the release agent. This release agent prevents the pigment from adhering permanently to the surface, allowing for easy removal with a dry cloth or eraser.

The development of dry erase markers in the mid-20th century revolutionized presentation and collaborative environments. Before their widespread adoption, chalkboards were the standard, and chalk dust was a common nuisance. Dry erase markers offered a cleaner, more vibrant alternative. They are available in a wide array of colors, making them suitable for various applications such as teaching, brainstorming, planning, and art. The tip size of dry erase markers can also vary, from fine tips for detailed writing to broader chisel tips for making larger marks or headings.

While designed for whiteboards, kuivamustekynät can also write on other smooth, non-porous surfaces like glass or laminated paper. However, they are not suitable for porous surfaces like paper or unfinished wood, as the ink will soak in and become permanent or difficult to remove. The longevity of a dry erase marker depends on factors such as usage frequency and proper storage, typically with the cap tightly sealed to prevent the ink from drying out.
