Kryptokokkenmeningitis is a rare and serious fungal infection caused by the Cryptococcus neoformans fungus. It primarily affects the central nervous system, particularly the brain and spinal cord, leading to inflammation of the meninges, the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The infection is typically acquired through inhalation of spores from bird droppings, soil, or dust contaminated with pigeon excrement.

The primary risk factors for kryptokokkenmeningitis include exposure to bird droppings, particularly in areas with high pigeon populations, such as urban environments. Individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients, or those undergoing immunosuppressive therapy, are at a higher risk of developing the infection. Additionally, individuals with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes and chronic lung diseases, may also be at increased risk.
