To obtain a chronometer certificate, a watch movement undergoes rigorous testing over a period of several days. The tests assess the accuracy of the watch in various positions and under different temperature conditions. Specific parameters for acceptable daily variations in timekeeping are defined. For mechanical watches, this often means an average daily rate between -4 and +6 seconds per day.
