Kromipinnoitetta

Kromipinnoitetta, or chromium plating, is a surface finishing process that applies a thin layer of chromium onto a metal object. This is typically achieved through electroplating, where the object to be plated is immersed in a chromium-containing electrolyte solution and an electric current is passed through it. The chromium ions from the solution deposit onto the surface of the object, forming a durable and decorative coating.

The primary purposes of chromium plating are to enhance the appearance, durability, and functionality of the underlying material. Chromium is known for its bright, reflective surface, which gives plated items a lustrous and attractive look. This makes it popular for decorative applications on automotive parts, furniture, and household appliances.

Beyond aesthetics, chromium plating significantly increases the hardness and wear resistance of the surface. This makes plated components less susceptible to scratching, abrasion, and general wear and tear, extending their service life. It also provides excellent corrosion resistance, protecting the base metal from rust and other forms of degradation, especially in humid or corrosive environments.

There are two main types of chromium plating: decorative chromium and hard chromium. Decorative chromium is typically applied in thinner layers and focuses on aesthetics and moderate protection. Hard chromium, on the other hand, is applied in thicker layers and is primarily used for its exceptional wear resistance and hardness in industrial applications, such as on machine parts, tools, and hydraulic components. The plating process requires careful control of parameters like current density, temperature, and solution composition to achieve the desired coating properties.
