A KreditkartenTerminal, often referred to as a point-of-sale (POS) terminal or card reader, is a hardware device used to process payments made with credit cards and debit cards. These terminals are typically found at merchants' checkout counters in physical retail locations. The primary function of a KreditkartenTerminal is to securely capture cardholder information and transmit it to the payment processor for authorization.

Modern KreditkartenTerminals come in various forms, from simple countertop devices to more advanced mobile units that can connect via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. They usually feature a keypad for entering PINs, a slot for inserting chip-enabled cards (EMV chips), and a magnetic stripe reader. Some terminals also incorporate contactless payment capabilities, allowing customers to pay by tapping their card or mobile device.

When a customer presents their card, the terminal reads the relevant information, either from the chip, magnetic stripe, or contactless interface. This data, along with the transaction amount, is then encrypted and sent through a secure network to the merchant's acquiring bank, which forwards it to the card network (e.g., Visa, Mastercard). The card network then routes the request to the issuing bank for approval or denial. Once authorization is received, the terminal prints a receipt for both the customer and the merchant. The underlying technology ensures the security and integrity of financial transactions.
