Kpindex

The Kp index is a global geomagnetic activity index that measures disturbances in Earth’s magnetic field caused by solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field variations. It is derived from measurements at 13 mid-latitude magnetic observatories located worldwide and is reported for 3-hour intervals. Each observatory assigns a local K value from 0 to 9 based on the observed fluctuations of the horizontal magnetic field; the planetary K-index, Kp, is the average of the 13 local K values rounded to the nearest integer, resulting in a value from 0 to 9.

The Kp index provides a standardized gauge of geomagnetic activity that is widely used in space weather forecasting and research. Higher Kp values indicate stronger geomagnetic disturbances, which can contribute to auroral activity and have practical impacts on satellite operations, radio communications, navigation systems, and power grids. In routine reporting, Kp values are often interpreted alongside the geomagnetic storm scale, with values of 5 and above typically associated with storm conditions.

Typical values and interpretation are informal but commonly used: 0–1 generally quiet, 2–3 unsettled, 4 active, 5 minor storm, 6 moderate storm, 7 strong storm, and 8–9 severe to extreme conditions. Forecasts and real-time data are published by space weather agencies such as the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center.

Limitations include its coarse 3-hour resolution and dependence on the network of observatories, which means the index may not capture very localized or highly rapid disturbances. The Kp index is related to other indices such as Ap, Dst, and AE, which provide complementary views of geomagnetic activity.
