The Kp index is a global geomagnetic activity index that measures disturbances in Earth’s magnetic field caused by solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field variations. It is derived from measurements at 13 mid-latitude magnetic observatories located worldwide and is reported for 3-hour intervals. Each observatory assigns a local K value from 0 to 9 based on the observed fluctuations of the horizontal magnetic field; the planetary K-index, Kp, is the average of the 13 local K values rounded to the nearest integer, resulting in a value from 0 to 9.
