Kovituslaiteita, commonly translated as "hardening devices" or "tempering devices" in English, are industrial tools used in the heat treatment of metals. Their primary function is to induce specific mechanical properties into metallic components through controlled heating and cooling processes. This process, known as hardening or tempering, is crucial for enhancing a material's strength, hardness, wear resistance, and ductility.

These devices vary greatly in design and complexity depending on the application. For smaller, more precise applications, benchtop furnaces or induction heaters might be employed. For larger-scale industrial production, massive continuous furnaces or specialized quenching baths are utilized. The core principle involves heating the metal to a specific temperature, often above its critical point, and then rapidly cooling it in a medium such as oil, water, or air. This rapid cooling, or quenching, freezes the material's microstructure in a hardened state.

Following quenching, metals are often subjected to tempering. This involves reheating the hardened metal to a lower temperature and holding it for a specific duration before cooling. Tempering reduces the brittleness introduced by hardening, increasing toughness and ductility while retaining a significant portion of the gained hardness. The precise temperature and time parameters for both hardening and tempering are critical and are determined by the specific metal alloy and the desired final properties of the component. Improperly executed heat treatment can lead to undesirable outcomes like cracking or reduced performance.
