A home theater system, or kotiteatterijärjestelmä in Finnish, refers to an integrated setup of audio and video components designed to replicate the cinematic experience in a residential setting. The primary goal is to achieve immersive sound and high-quality picture reproduction, enhancing entertainment such as movies, TV shows, and video games.

Key components of a typical home theater system include a display device, such as a television or projector with a screen, and an audio system. The audio system usually comprises an AV receiver, which acts as the central hub, processing audio and video signals and distributing them to various speakers. These speakers are strategically placed around the viewing area to create surround sound, often in configurations like 5.1 (five speakers and one subwoofer) or 7.1 (seven speakers and one subwoofer), and more advanced formats like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X for three-dimensional audio.

A source device is also essential, providing the content to be played. This can include Blu-ray players, streaming devices, game consoles, or cable/satellite boxes. The interconnection of these components is achieved through various cables, most commonly HDMI for high-definition audio and video transmission.
