Kostprijsmethoden, or cost accounting methods, are techniques used by businesses to determine the cost of producing goods or services. These methods are crucial for inventory valuation, pricing decisions, and profitability analysis. The primary goal is to allocate all relevant costs, both direct and indirect, to the cost objects.

A common approach is the absorption costing method, also known as full costing. This method assigns all manufacturing costs, including direct materials, direct labor, and both variable and fixed manufacturing overhead, to the cost of the product. This ensures that the cost of a unit reflects its full production expense.

Another method is variable costing, or direct costing. This method only assigns variable manufacturing costs to the cost of the product. Fixed manufacturing overhead is treated as a period cost and expensed in the period it is incurred, rather than being allocated to inventory. This can provide a clearer picture of the impact of sales volume on profit.

Activity-based costing (ABC) is a more refined method that identifies activities performed within a business and assigns costs to cost objects based on their consumption of these activities. ABC aims to provide a more accurate allocation of overhead costs, especially in complex production environments with diverse products and processes. The choice of cost accounting method can significantly impact reported profits and inventory values, making it an important strategic decision for management.
