Kosteudensäilyttäjä, often translated as humectant, is a substance that attracts and retains moisture. In various industries, particularly in cosmetics, personal care products, and food, humectants play a crucial role in maintaining hydration and texture. They work by drawing water from the environment or deeper layers of the skin into the outermost layer of the epidermis.

Common examples of humectants include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, sorbitol, and urea. They are often found in moisturizers, serums, and masks. In food, humectants help to keep products moist and prevent them from drying out, improving their shelf life and palatability.
