Kosovë

Kosovë, known in Albanian as Kosovë (often Kosovë/ Kosova in Albanian, and Kosovo in English), is a landlocked region in the central Balkans. It is bordered by Serbia to the north and east, Montenegro to the northwest, Albania to the southwest, and North Macedonia to the south. The capital and largest city is Prishtinë (Pristina). Official languages are Albanian and Serbian; minority languages include Turkish, Romani and Bosnian.

Kosovë declared independence from Serbia on 17 February 2008. It is recognized by more than 100 United Nations member states and several international organizations, but it is not a United Nations member, and Serbia does not recognize its sovereignty. The territory operates with its own provisional institutions and a constitutional framework, and it maintains a parliamentary republic structure. The European Union and other international actors have supported ongoing dialogue with Serbia aimed at normalising relations as part of Kosovo’s broader Euro-Atlantic integration process.

Demographics: the population is around 1.8–2.0 million, with an ethnic Albanian majority and significant Serb, Bosniak, Roma, and other minority communities. The predominant religion among Albanians is Islam, while the Serbian Orthodox Church is a major presence among Serbs.

Economy: Kosovo has a small, open economy focused on services, trade, and energy. Electric power has historically relied on domestic coal-fired plants (Kosovo A and Kosovo B) and imports. The euro is used as the de facto currency. GDP per capita is relatively low by European standards, with remittances and development aid playing important roles in the economy. The government emphasizes reforms and EU integration as pathways for future growth.
