Korvausmekanismeja, or compensation mechanisms, refer to the various ways individuals or entities are remunerated for losses, damages, or services rendered. These mechanisms are fundamental to legal systems, insurance practices, and contractual agreements, aiming to restore a party to their original position or to provide fair recompense.

In a legal context, compensation mechanisms often involve monetary damages awarded by a court to a plaintiff who has suffered harm. This can include compensatory damages, designed to cover actual losses such as medical expenses or lost income, and in some cases, punitive damages, intended to punish a defendant for egregious behavior. Restitution is another form, where a defendant is ordered to return ill-gotten gains or compensate the victim for the value of the property or service.

The insurance industry relies heavily on compensation mechanisms. When an insured event occurs, such as an accident or property damage, the insurer compensates the policyholder according to the terms of the contract. This compensation can take the form of a direct payout, repair of damaged property, or replacement of lost items. Deductibles and policy limits are key features of these mechanisms, defining the extent of the insurer's and the insured's responsibilities.

Contract law also employs compensation mechanisms. If one party breaches a contract, the non-breaching party may be entitled to damages to offset the losses incurred due to the breach. These can include expectation damages (to put the party in the position they would have been in had the contract been fulfilled), reliance damages (to cover expenses incurred in reliance on the contract), or restitutionary damages (to prevent unjust enrichment).
