Korsö

A korsó is a type of drinking vessel, commonly understood as a sturdy beer mug or tankard. In Hungarian usage, it refers to a wide, handle-equipped cup designed for cold beverages, especially beer, and it is a familiar sight in pubs, beer halls, and social gatherings in Hungary and parts of Central Europe.

A korsó is typically made from ceramic, glass, metal, or a combination of these materials. It is heavier and more robust than a tall wine glass or a simple tumbler, with a practical handle for easy holding. The most common capacity is around 0.5 liters, but versions can be smaller, larger, or insulated. Shapes vary from straight-sided cylinders to slightly bulging forms, all designed for durability and repeated use.

In everyday Hungarian culture, sörös korsó—beer mugs—are a traditional serve in many drinking establishments. They are often found in casual pubs, beer gardens, and festival settings, where the mug can be decorated with logos, emblems, or regional motifs. Korsók are valued for their tactile heft and ability to keep beverages cool, and they are sometimes kept as souvenirs or collected as part of regional crafts.

Other contexts treat korsó as a generic term for a drinking mug, distinct from pohár (a glass) or koccintás (toast). While primarily associated with beer, korsók can be used for other cold drinks as well.
