Korsettbehandlung, also known as brace treatment, is a non-surgical method used primarily to manage spinal deformities such as scoliosis. It involves wearing a rigid or semi-rigid supportive device that applies pressure to the spine in an effort to correct or halt the progression of the curvature. The goal is often to prevent further worsening of the spinal deviation and to maintain spinal alignment as the patient grows.

The type of corset used depends on the specific condition, the severity of the curvature, and the patient's age. Common types include the Milwaukee brace, the Boston brace, and the Cheneau brace, each with a distinct design and application method. These braces are typically worn for a significant portion of the day, often 18 to 23 hours, and their effectiveness is most pronounced during periods of skeletal growth.

Korsettbehandlung is usually prescribed by an orthopedic specialist after careful evaluation, including X-rays. The treatment plan is individualized, and regular follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor the brace's fit and the progression of the spinal deformity. While bracing can be effective in preventing curve progression, it does not typically reverse existing curvature. Patient compliance is a critical factor for successful outcomes. Side effects can include skin irritation, discomfort, and psychological impact due to the constant wear of the brace. Physical therapy and exercise are often recommended in conjunction with bracing to maintain muscle strength and flexibility.
