Korrosioonivähenduseks, often referred to as corrosion inhibitors, are chemical substances that, when added in small concentrations to an environment, prevent or significantly slow down the corrosion of a metal. Corrosion is a natural process, typically an electrochemical reaction, where a metal degrades due to interaction with its environment, such as air or water. Inhibitors work by forming a protective film on the metal surface, creating a barrier that isolates the metal from the corrosive agents.

There are various types of corrosion inhibitors, categorized by their mechanism of action or their chemical composition. Some inhibitors are anodic, affecting the anodic reaction of the corrosion process. Others are cathodic, influencing the cathodic reaction. Mixed inhibitors affect both. Organic inhibitors, often containing heteroatoms like nitrogen, sulfur, or oxygen, adsorb onto the metal surface, forming a protective layer. Inorganic inhibitors, such as chromates or phosphates, can precipitate on the metal surface or react with it to form a protective oxide or salt layer.

The effectiveness of a corrosion inhibitor depends on several factors, including the type of metal, the corrosive environment (e.g., pH, temperature, presence of specific ions), and the concentration of the inhibitor. Common applications for corrosion inhibitors include protecting metal surfaces in cooling water systems, oil and gas pipelines, automotive antifreeze, and protective coatings. Their use is crucial in extending the lifespan of metallic structures and equipment, reducing maintenance costs, and preventing potential safety hazards associated with metal degradation.
