Korroosioruostuminen

Korroosioruostuminen, commonly known as rusting, is a natural process that occurs when iron or its alloys, such as steel, are exposed to oxygen and moisture. This electrochemical reaction leads to the formation of iron oxides, which we recognize as the reddish-brown, flaky substance called rust. The process involves the oxidation of iron, where iron atoms lose electrons and become iron ions. These iron ions then react with oxygen and water to form various iron oxides and hydroxides.

The rate of corrosion can be influenced by several factors. The presence of electrolytes, like salts, significantly accelerates the process by facilitating the flow of ions. This is why rusting is more prevalent in humid environments or near saltwater. Impurities in the metal can also affect its susceptibility to corrosion. Furthermore, temperature plays a role, with higher temperatures generally increasing the rate of chemical reactions, including rusting.

Rusting is an undesirable phenomenon as it weakens the structural integrity of iron-based materials. It can lead to the degradation of bridges, vehicles, buildings, and countless other objects. To prevent or slow down corrosion, various protective measures are employed. These include applying protective coatings like paint or galvanization (coating with zinc), which act as a barrier between the iron and the environment. Sacrificial anodes, made of a more reactive metal like magnesium, can also be used to corrode instead of the iron structure.
