Korkkiteollisuus refers to the industry involved in the harvesting of cork bark from cork oak trees and its subsequent processing into various products. The primary source of cork is the Mediterranean region, with Portugal and Spain being the largest producers. Cork oak trees are unique in that their bark can be harvested without harming the tree, a process called stripping. The bark regenerates over time, allowing for repeated harvests every nine to twelve years.

The harvested cork undergoes several stages of processing. It is first boiled to remove impurities and make it more pliable. Then, it is sorted by quality and size. The most well-known application of cork is in wine stoppers, where its natural elasticity and impermeability prevent oxidation and leakage. However, the cork industry extends far beyond wine stoppers.

Cork is also used in a wide range of other products. It is utilized in flooring and wall coverings due to its insulating properties, durability, and aesthetic appeal. In the fashion industry, cork is increasingly popular for making bags, wallets, and shoes, offering a sustainable and vegan alternative to traditional materials. It is also found in automotive components, acoustic insulation, and even in the aerospace industry for its thermal insulation capabilities. The industry emphasizes sustainable harvesting practices to ensure the long-term health of cork oak forests, which play a vital role in biodiversity and carbon sequestration.
